SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) is a ski resort on Mount Mackenzie, just outside Revelstoke, British Columbia in Canada. It is owned by Northland Properties.
Currently, the resort has a 1713m (5620ft) vertical drop, Revelstoke has the longest vertical descent of any ski resort in North America. In terms of size, it is about the same as other major resorts, such as Breckenridge and Panorama, and about a third the size of Whistler-Blackcomb. When completed, it will have 10,000 acres (40 km2), which will make it the largest in North America.
Mount Mackenzie and the surrounding area has hosted a number of skiing operations for many years. Starting in the late 1960s a single two-person lift has been operational on the lower slopes, forming the basis of a resort known as Powder Springs. More recently, both Sno-Cat and Heli Skiing operations have operated in the bowls on the upper elevations.
During the summer of 2008, further trail cutting in the “North Bowl” area extended the skiable area and added a number of expert runs and glades. The Ripper, a second four-person chairlift, was added in 2008. The gondola was extended down the hill in December 2008, from the original base area to the new village area further down the hill. With this extension the lift-served vertical increased to 5,620 ft (1,710 m), overtaking Whistler’s 5,280 ft (1,610 m), making it the largest in North America.
Construction began in late 2005 with the completion of a road allowing access to most of the mountain. Construction of the first five ski trails started at the top of the existing 2-person chairlift at 1100 m, extending up to 1350 m. Construction on higher-altitude trails began during the summer of 2006, covering the area from 1350 m (4320 ft) to 2300 m (7360 ft). The chairlift was removed and replaced by a new eight-person gondola, running from the original “base” area to the mid-mountain area, while a new four-person high-speed chairlift ran from that point almost to the top of the mountain.

First-timer tip: Get the lowdown on Revelstoke Mountain Resort by reviewing the Beginner’s Mountain Guide. Also, consider hiring a guide for a private tour of the mountain. It’ll save you from getting lost while putting you in their secret powder loot.
High-end: Indulge yourself with Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing’s new Unlimited Vertical program on both its day heli skiing and multi-day heli skiing packages. Three-day, all-inclusive packages run $4,699, and it’s likely the best money you’ll ever spend.
Other activities: If you still have any energy left after skiing, you can try new-this-year snowshoe tours from the top of the Revelation Gondola, as well as snow tubing at the Turtle Creek Tube Park and, if your legs can stand it, night skiing at the Beginner Area at the base village.
Après: Hit the MacKenzie Tavern, a snowball’s throw from your skis, for an Ugly Sweater or Mt. Begbie Pale Ale to wash down a plate of calamari or a charcuterie platter. Just be prepared for spritely conversation with a transplanted Kiwi or Aussie.
Where to ski: If it’s a powder day, head up 3,000 vertical feet on the gondola, then straight to another 2,600 on the Stoke chair. If patrol is still controlling North Bowl and beyond, lap Stoke and wait for the rope to drop to rip unending freshies to the aptly named Ripper chair. When you tire of lift-served pow, boot-hike an additional 377 feet to the top of Sub-Peak, which leads you into Gracias Ridge and Greeley Bowl. Then kiss your quads goodbye.
