SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Breckenridge Ski Resort is an alpine ski resort in the western United States, in Breckenridge, Colorado. Just west of the Continental Divide in Summit County, it is perennially one of the most visited ski resorts in the western hemisphere. Breckenridge is owned and operated by Vail Resorts, Inc.

With five awe-inspiring peaks towering over an authentic mountain town, Breckenridge is unquestionably a must-visit locale. It is home to the largest historic district in Colorado, the highest lift in North America and miles and miles of endless possibilities (about 4.9 of them to be exact). Main Street is covered with exquisite eateries, spectacular shops and more winter watering holes than even the locals know what to do with. Not to mention, a vibrant nightlife scene keeps the party going well after après ski. Despite being situated among majestic mountains at 9,600 feet, you’ll find an incredibly charming and down to earth culture making Breck the perfect place for a unique and unforgettable getaway.

Towering majestically over an old mining town with a high point reaching a dizzying elevation of nearly 13,000 feet, Breckenridge Ski Resort is striking. Characterized by the expansive Horseshoe Bowl nestled between peaks and ridges, it’s safe to say that Breckenridge (or ‘Breck’ as it’s known to locals) ranks among the most impressive-looking ski resorts in the world. And as you might imagine, its panache extends far beyond aesthetic beauty.

Adjusting to Altitude

Breckenridge’s elevation just in town is 9,600 feet above sea level. Allowing us to have the highest elevation movie theatre, distillery, pizza restaurant (and so on and so on) in North America. The uppermost elevation at the top of the Breckenridge ski resort is 12,998 feet above sea level.

For some people, going from low altitudes to high altitudes within a short time frame and experiencing less air intake per breath than what the body is accustomed and conditioned, can cause altitude sickness.

While most “flatlanders” who visit these elevations adjust well there always seems to be one in the group or family that gets hit with it.

Altitude sickness can be severe for some, while others may feel nothing at all – it is a random affliction and has nothing to do with how in shape you are – some people are affected by it, and some aren’t.

It typically takes 2-3 days for your body to adjust to altitude fully.

The most common mistake if prone to altitude sickness is to eat a big dinner and drink lots of alcohol your first night here.

Suggestions for avoiding altitude sickness:

  • If you have the time, spend a night in Denver to give your body time to acclimate. Denver is only a mile high while Breck is closer to two miles high.
  • Do drink lots of water and don’t drink lots of alcohol your first night or two.
  • Get a prescription for Diamox. Diamox is incredibly successful at fighting the effects of Altitude sickness, and your doctor can prescribe it knowing you will be visiting these altitudes.
  • Do not eat after 6:00 pm and your last meal of the day on the first day should be pasta. Your body needs time to digest before sleeping, and your REM sleep will not occur with a full stomach. Carbohydrates are the perfect food for your body to recover during rest and provide fuel for your next day.
  • Get oxygen. There is an oxygen bar downtown, and yes we do mean that. There are also several mobile doctors that can provide oxygen for those who are having a difficult time adjusting.

Climate

The phrase around here is we have 300 days of Sunshine & 300 inches of Snow. Breckenridge is also fondly known sometimes as “BreckenFridge” and “BreckenWind.”

It’s not as cold here however as you may think. We typically have very low humidity so you may even find our “dry air cold” easier to deal with than the winter cold in areas of the country with humidity.

Remember that sunscreen is even more critical when you are two miles closer to the sun.

There isn’t bad weather just bad gear. Dress in layers, come prepared with the right clothing. If you need better or updated apparel and gear, there are a few dozen shops here willing to sell it to you.
